9 TH GRADE    I TRIMESTER SPEECH FINAL TEST

DELIVERY OF A SPEECH WITH MANUSCRIPT METHOD

Learning Objectives:

1.   Identify the manuscript method as an effective one when information needs to be accurate.
2.   Implement effective verbal and nonverbal language, as well as eye contact to engage the audience.
3.   Recognize the qualities that make a good speaker.
Deliver a speech about the life of an admirable speaker -use a manuscript.
Suggestions: John F. Kennedy, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Abraham Lincoln, Mahatma Gandhi, Barack Obama, Martin Luther King, Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, etc
  • Instructions:

  • Reference pages 288 and 289 Glencoe Speech Textbook

·         Use the manuscript as a support, but avoid reading it word-for-word.
·         Manuscripts read from a printed copy sound mechanical. Be natural.
·         If you read 100% of the manuscript, your audience will get bored.
·         Eye contact, vocal variety, and facial expressions help motivate your audience.
·         Highlight key words on your manuscript. Remember key phrases and practice your speech repeatedly.
·         As you read through your speech, take a quick look at the highlighted words to remember which idea comes next.
·         Familiarize yourself with the substance of your speech and the sequence of your main points. 
·         You don´t need to memorize your speech word by word, the speech may vary somewhat from the manuscript, but it will sound more natural.
·         You MUST hand in a copy of your manuscript with your full name to the teacher before you deliver the speech.
·         Listen attentively and respectfully while your peers deliver their own speech.
·         A copy of the rubric to be used is enclosed, read it carefully so you know what is expected from you.



Content of the Biography:
·         Introduction that mentions the character´s name, and something that has made his/her   life remarkable.
·         Content: Explain 8 to 10 important events in his/ her life

·         Conclusion: Wrap up the ideas, mention why this person is admirable or a lesson you have learned from him/her.
